We are thrilled to shine a bright light on BFC Alumna Abby (Hagland) Watteny, a proud Venture from the Class of 1998!
“Take full advantage of the environment you’re in. Bishop Foley gives you more than classes and grades — it gives you a foundation of values, community, and discipline that will matter long after high school. Lean into that. Work hard, stay curious, and don’t be afraid to challenge yourself academically or personally. The habits you build now will follow you into college, your career, and every stage of your life.”
This is just one piece of advice Abby, a Talent Manager in the automotive industry, shares with current and future Bishop Foley students.
Abby attributes much of who she is today to her four years at Bishop Foley Catholic High School. She reflects, “Attending Bishop Foley Catholic High School shaped my life in three defining ways: my identity, my relationships, and my sense of direction and drive.”
Her time at Foley instilled core values such as service, discipline, and a strong work ethic—values that continue to guide her decisions and actions today. Bishop Foley’s commitment to service creates opportunities for students to support organizations, communities, and individuals in need, helping shape students into compassionate leaders.
Abby also shared that Foley was “the beginning of meaningful friendships and relationships that enriched my life.” The connections she made during her time at Foley helped build her confidence, strengthen her interpersonal skills, and influence who she is both personally and professionally today.
Discipline is a key word Abby uses when reflecting on the path her life has taken. She says Foley encouraged her work ethic and helped establish principles that continue to guide her:
“The principles of working hard and doing the right thing—taught at home and reinforced throughout my time at Foley—have remained steady anchors throughout my life.”
Memories Made Through Athletics
Some of Abby’s favorite memories were made in the Bishop Foley gym. As a three-sport athlete in basketball, volleyball, and softball, the courts and fields became places where she formed lifelong friendships and experienced some of her most memorable moments.
“There is a unique sense of Venture Pride that comes with being an athlete at Foley. The teamwork, encouragement, and camaraderie I felt came not only from my teammates but also from the exceptional coaches and staff who created such a supportive and motivating environment.”
The athletic experience at Foley continues to be a meaningful part of the school community. For many students and alumni, sports create lifelong friendships, teach teamwork, and build connections that last well beyond graduation.
Preparing Students for Life Beyond Foley
Abby shares that, “Bishop Foley prepared me for life after high school in ways that reached far beyond the classroom.”
Academically, Foley provided her with a strong foundation for college by “teaching me how to think critically, manage my time, and take responsibility for my own learning.”
The expectations were high, but that structure helped Abby develop the discipline and study habits she would rely on throughout higher education and her professional career.
Beyond academics, Abby emphasizes the importance of personal development and character formation.
“Foley emphasized character, integrity, and service—values that shaped how I show up in the world. I learned how to work hard, how to treat people with respect, and how to stay grounded in what’s right, even when it’s not the easiest path.”
The Importance of Relationships
The relationships Abby built at Bishop Foley played an important role in preparing her for life beyond high school.
“Teachers, coaches, and classmates created an environment where I felt supported and challenged. Those experiences helped me build confidence, communicate effectively, and work well with others—skills that have been essential in my personal life and professional journey.”
She continues to carry those lessons with her today:
“In many ways, the direction my life has taken is rooted in the habits, values, faith, and sense of purpose that were nurtured at Bishop Foley. It gave me the tools to succeed, the confidence to pursue my goals, and the character to navigate whatever comes next.”
Advice for Current and Future Ventures
As a mentor and inspiration to others, Abby encourages students to embrace every opportunity Foley provides.
“Get involved.”
Whether through sports, clubs, service projects, or leadership opportunities, students gain valuable experiences that teach teamwork, communication, and resilience in ways that go beyond the classroom.
“They also help you discover what you’re passionate about and what kind of person you want to become.”
Abby also encourages students to build relationships with those around them—teachers, coaches, and classmates.
“The support system around you at Foley is something special. The people you connect with now can become mentors, lifelong friends, and sources of guidance when you need it most.”
Her final message to current and future students reflects the heart of the Bishop Foley experience:
“Most importantly, trust in your faith and stay true to the values Foley emphasizes—integrity, service, and doing the right thing even when it’s hard. Those principles will carry you through challenges, open doors, and help you build a life you’re proud of.”
A Lifelong Connection to Foley
Abby’s connection to Bishop Foley has remained strong through lifelong friendships and relationships. She continues to stay connected with many classmates and former coaches.
Her family has also continued to be part of the Foley community. Both of her children have participated in Bishop Foley sports and summer camps. Her son especially enjoys baseball camps with Coach Tim McEvoy, whom Abby describes as a wonderful coach and a valuable part of the Foley community.
Abby also reflects fondly on her Anatomy and Physiology and Physics classes with Mr. Stachnik. While those subjects do not directly relate to her current career, she says, “the critical thinking and problem solving learned in those classes and from that teacher have helped me through my career.”
